Morgue Files
August 17th, 2009 by matt
I recently finished reading The Principles of Beautiful Web Design and it mentioned the use of a Morgue File. I had never heard of a Morgue File before and this opened me up to a whole new train of thinking.
Here’s the concept: Say you’re working on a pretty big project that is involves a particular topic. You clip out and print up anything you can find that might give you inspiration and keep it all in a folder. It helps with your current project, and should you ever need to do another project involving that topic, you’ll have lots of inspiration on hand.
Now here is where I expanded on this thought to match my needs. Since much of my inspiration comes from other websites, articles, videos, graphics, etc. I decided it would be much easier to store everything online. Since then I’ve started to do this on all major projects that I work on. I gather a mix of websites, screenshots, etc. and store them online as my morgue file. I also include my train of thought and ideas that I had about the project, no matter if I ended up using it or not.
Here is one of my first morgue files that I created while working on a microsite: Morgue File: FB Food Drive.
A great thing with having your morgue files online is now you can share with other designers or friends that may be interested in how you came about with this particular project. With that in mind I’ve decided to keep all of my morgue files public on this blog so that at anytime you guys (and gals) can go check them out for inspiration and to possibly help when you get stuck.
