Three Most Common Barriers To Web Innovation – Part 1

June 25th, 2010 by Matt Haff

Technophobia – The fear of new technology, keeps a lot of skilled designers out of web design. The result is that most web design, thus deprived of disciplined designers, still falls below the aesthetic level considered standard for catalogs, annual reports, and books.

Common misconception among graphic designers, I can’t design for web, I don’t know anything about the technology behind the design. That’s why there are graphic designers/web designers (to make the design) and web developers (to build the site). Graphic designers aren’t expected to know all the backend stuff that has to be done, they just need to understand there are limitations. Designing for the web is a totally different beast from designing print because you are limited by web browsers. You’ll never know what someone’s screen resolution might be, what browser they’re using, what fonts they have installed on their computer, etc. Print designs turn out exactly the way you want, no boundaries…web on the other hand depends on the user.

Sadly this is why most websites you stumble upon today look like something a kid made in 3rd grade art class. Due to the lack of talented graphic designers focusing on web…developers are attempting to design the sites themselves. Now some developers have a background in design so it’s not so bad, but the majority of them are horrid.
